Feather River Diesel Spill, January 25, 2013

OSPR team supported CDFW Region 2 response to a red dye diesel spill in Feather River Canyon near town of Keddie. Spill occurred around 1:30 a.m., when a boulder fell and struck the fuel tank of a lead locomotive on Union Pacific Railroad Train. Approximately 3,200 gallons of diesel spilled onto land with an unknown amount reaching the water. Sheen reported for 6 miles down Feather River. Boom was deployed to capture gross product. Monitoring for wildlife impacts ongoing. At this time, no impacts to Oroville Reservoir anticipated. Shifting weather and canyon access affecting response to limited extent. Additional agencies on scene. Daily cleanup operations continued as of Feb. 22, 2013.
